What is an innerspring mattress?

Innerspring mattresses are made with a steel coil innerspring support system.  Among the many types of spring systems are springs connected into a single unit and springs individually wrapped in pocketed coils.  Variations in spring shapes, coil gauge, number of coils, and types of foam and fiber layers change the feel and look of the overall mattress.
